Enthusiasm Over Knowledge
Personality is key
When I first joined the workplace I was surprised to hear my colleague say, ‘I can live with enthusiasm as you can teach skills but you are unable to learn a new personality’.
This shocked me as I thought that an interview was an assessment of skill and that you needed a high level to get the job. This was turned on its head when that same colleague offered me a different perspective.
Personality is Key
Those who are enthusiastic will strive to learn more. These individuals will go above and beyond to ensure that they have the knowledge needed to be the best employee possible.
Most of these individuals do not arrive with all of the knowledge they need but they arrive with personality. The ability to work with anyone of any level and be a true team player.
Many who may appear to be knowledgeable have the personality of a dung beetle, they can’t work with others and whilst they interview well, cannot work within a group dynamic.
With this in mind, I changed my outlook and ensured that I gave everyone a chance, regardless of their level of skill.
